Tom’s Bio

About Tom Kimmel
Tom Kimmel is a respected Pearl Harbor scholar, a former FBI agent, and the eldest grandson of Admiral Husband E. Kimmel, Commander of the Pacific Fleet during the December 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor. He comes from a family deeply rooted in American service, scholarship, and leadership.
Despite this honorable lineage, his grandfather was blamed by the floor of the House of Representatives for failing to prevent both World War II and the Cold War. Even earlier, Tom’s fourth great-grandfather was accused of starting the Revolutionary War and leading the Whiskey Rebellion. Tom continues to welcome the opportunity to respond to these historical accusations with truth and perspective.
A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Tom served aboard three warships during the Vietnam War. Afterward, he attended John Marshall Law School and joined the FBI in 1973, where he served for more than 25 years. His work spanned intelligence, counterterrorism, criminal investigations, and national security.
Throughout his distinguished FBI career, Tom:
- Investigated organized crime in Cleveland
- Served on the House Appropriations Committee’s Surveys and Investigations Staff at CIA Headquarters
- Headed the FBI office in East Texas
- Led the Labor Racketeering Unit at FBI Headquarters
- Directed the National Drug Intelligence Center in Johnstown, PA
- Served on the President’s Council on Integrity and Efficiency
- Acted as Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Philadelphia Division, overseeing Foreign Counterintelligence and Terrorism Programs during the 1993 World Trade Center attack
Following his retirement, Tom continued consulting for the FBI, helping address major spy scandals within both the FBI and CIA. His insights and advocacy have reached global audiences through appearances at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., two features on 60 Minutes, and coverage on War Stories Investigates with Oliver North, the Discovery Channel, and the National Geographic Channel.
